Summary: Replacing a broken TFT Storz lock takes just three steps: remove the old lever, assemble the new lock and tool, then install the lever onto the coupling. With the right kit and a little leverage, this repair can be done quickly on the bench or in the bay using basic tools.
3-Step Guide to Replacing a Broken TFT Storz Lock
If your Storz lock snapped off or wore out, you don’t need to replace the whole coupling (as long as the post is intact). With the right lock kit — and a couple of basic tools — you can install a new aluminum Storz lock in just three steps.
Here’s the quick and dirty how-to from the TFT shop floor.
Step 1: Remove the Old Storz Lever
This is where most folks get hung up, especially if the broken lock is stubborn or jammed.
Do This:
-
Press the remaining piece of the lever tightly against the casting to give yourself some clearance.
-
Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old lever off the coupling post.
-
Work slowly to avoid damaging the post. If the post is missing or broken, you’ll need to replace the entire coupling.
Step 2: Assemble the Storz Lock Tool
Once the old lock is off, it’s time to build your new one using the included parts from your 4" or 5" TFT kit.
Do This:
-
Insert the spring into the new Storz lever.
-
Slide the Storz preload tool into the lever — it helps position the spring correctly during install.
-
Carefully push the spring end under the tool’s rod. This keeps it under tension and aligned for the next step.
Step 3: Install the New Storz Lever
You’re almost there. Now, it’s just a matter of popping the new lever back onto the post.
Do This:
-
Line up the hole in the lever with the small rod or post on the coupling casting.
-
Use your thumbs and index fingers to press the lever straight onto the coupling. You’ll feel it snap into place once it’s secure.
Once installed, the aluminum lever will stay firmly in place thanks to the tension from the spring and the grip of the preload tool. These new-style locks are tough and built to last far longer than the original plastic versions.
