Rebuilding a TFT pressure relief valve doesn’t have to be a guessing game. If you're working with an older valve or one that’s seen some wear, the key is knowing which rebuild kit fits your setup: the PRV Kit or the PRV-G Kit. Here’s how to tell the difference and avoid costly missteps.

Know the Two Kits: PRV vs PRV-G

TFT offers two rebuild kits for pressure relief valves:

PRV Kit: This fits any TFT pressure relief valve manufactured after June 2012. It includes internal seals, O-rings, a seat, moly coat assembly grease, and blue Loctite. If your valve was built after this date and does not have a galvanic isolator, this is your kit.

PRV-G Kit: The "G" stands for galvanic isolator. This kit is for standalone TFT pressure relief valves that include a galvanic isolator — a feature added starting in late 2020. In addition to seals and seat components, this kit includes a new galvanic isolator.

How to Determine Your Valve’s Build Date

There are a couple ways to check your valve’s manufacturing date:

  • Standalone PRVs: Look for a barcode label with the serial number. You can plug this number into TFT’s website to get the manufacturing date.

  • PRVs on TFT Devices: If the valve is mounted to something like an intake valve, it won’t have its own label. In that case, use the serial number of the larger device to track the build date.

Quick Visual Check: Pre-2012 vs Post-2012

If you can’t track the serial number, look at the size of the discharge hole:

  • Larger port: Likely pre-2012 — no rebuild kit available, full replacement needed.

  • Smaller port: Post-2012 — compatible with the PRV Kit.

When to Rebuild and When to Replace

Before ordering a kit, unbolt the valve and inspect the sealing surface. If there’s visible corrosion where the seat meets the casting, the rebuild might not hold. In those cases, full replacement is the safer route.
